Hohe Tauern National Park
The heart of the national park is the Großglockner (3,798 m), Austria's highest mountain, surrounded by imposing peaks such as the Großvenediger and the Hochalmspitze. The Krimml Waterfalls, which are among the highest in Europe with a drop of 385 meters, are a special natural wonder. The glaciers of the Pasterze and the Obersulzbachtal as well as idyllic Alpine valleys such as the Seebachtal or the Gasteinertal characterize the landscape.
For hikers and mountaineers, the national park offers over 1,200 km of marked trails, including spectacular routes such as the Venediger Höhenweg, the ascent of the Grossglockner or the Zirbenweg in Defereggen Valley. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road leads through the high alpine landscape with numerous viewpoints and information stations and is one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in Europe. In winter, ski tours on the Sonnblick, snowshoe hikes in the Rauris Valley and first-class ski resorts such as Kals-Matrei or Heiligenblut beckon.
In addition to sporting activities, the focus is on experiencing nature and conservation. Visitors can observe ibex, marmots and bearded vultures at wildlife observation points or stop off at mountain huts such as the Rudolfshütte. Traditional mountain huts in Virgental or Hollersbachtal invite you to sample regional specialties such as Pinzgauer Kasnocken or Osttiroler Schlipfkrapfen.
